The beloved crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th installment, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode season created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast this spring, according to the production team.

The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."

The previous season wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to combat corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

However, his case could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans track the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston described appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

The drama launched in the early 2010s and became a highly successful television series of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six brought the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the network announced on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
