New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that became a focal point in his run for office.

A Historic Residence

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors from the post-war period.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core platform, did not confirm he would live there promptly following his triumph in November.

"The choice was based on the security of my family and the importance of directing my complete efforts on enacting the agenda for affordability New Yorkers elected me on," stated Mamdani on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community famous for its diverse cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.

"To Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, it will always live a part of me and my work," he added.

Political Debate

In his campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.

Yet his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit even though he is from a well-known family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a place for civic gatherings, and championed a major refurbishment of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings far removed from his previous Astoria digs.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.

Within, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed consistent with the home's original era.

The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

His former home is under rent control, which means the city regulates on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.

City residents consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the price of rent exceeds the means of many residents.

Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
