Weather experts are reporting a frosty start to the new year, with wintry precipitation expected throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are being urged to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Proceed Despite Forecasts

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay festivities are planned to proceed, following last year's postponement. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be necessary," stated the Met Office.

Celebrations Under Clear but Chilly Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with no rain and good visibility. The mercury are expected to be cold, meaning extra layers essential, according to forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Extensive Snow Warnings for Friday

Heading into Friday, advisories are active for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Commuting is expected to be impacted.
• People have been urged to leave additional time for travel on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are expected on public transport.

The Mercury Forecast to Drop Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Medical Advisories Issued

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this indicated the weather was likely to lead to notable consequences across medical and care provision. This includes a potential rise in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.
