An defense minister has stated that the MoD is currently looking into the possible threats associated with Chinese cars, and personnel have been advised to avoid discussing secret information in any cars.
Safety Advice for Defence Staff
During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about classified material while travelling in China-made cars.
The minister stated that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, but emphasised that security is a issue in every modern cars.
Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their car, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any vehicle, due to the growing threats of surveillance that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.
When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Defence Context
The announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese buses, which could enable China to switch off buses and bring disruption to public transit.
Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.
This wider security environment underscores the importance of strong measures and vigilance in every aspects of official operations, including vehicle use to discussions practices.
