Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
The forward, with half a year left on her contract, is known as a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United appear to be building momentum.
Recent performances include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure commented: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
