Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Once more, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”
NYPD issued video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims were reported.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his wife just had a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in spring and was projected as a key part of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
