Israelis mark second anniversary of 7 October attacks as Palestinian peace negotiations advance
Citizens have gathered around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-initiated attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions proceeded in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in Gaza.
The incident led to in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"The bloodthirsty adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the leader added on Tuesday.
He also promised to "achieve all the aims of the war: the return of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will not pose a threat to Israel".
Memorial Events Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed state commemorations until October 16th - after the completion of the festive season - but ceremonies still were held around the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas assault was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised throughout Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was observed around the country.
Peace Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to review the terms of the plan.
A high-ranking delegate involved in the talks indicated that an evening round of negotiations started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official stated the morning session ended without significant progress, due to conflicting views over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the initial stage of the deal.
He noted that the negotiations are "tough and have still not produce any significant progress," but mentioned that intermediaries are working hard to close the gaps between the conflicting groups.
Essential Matters in Talks
- An enduring truce
- The swap of the captives still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies deliveries
- Post-war governance of the area
Civilian Sentiment
In the city's public square previously, young Hagar - whose sibling survived the attack on the gathering, where 378 people were lost their lives and many more were captured by Hamas militants - told: "Nowhere feels like home anymore and until each abducted person return no one will have peace of mind."
"Once we see all home again, we can feel relief again. Then we can start to heal," she added.
Outside the leader's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their backing for the relatives of the abducted. Israel states forty-eight stay in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.
Protester a participant remarked: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be protected."
Surveys now frequently demonstrate that approximately 70% of the population prefer the conflict to conclude in as payment for the liberation of the hostages.
Palestinian Situation
At the site of the music event, those paying respects gathered to honor the dead.
From the site, the boom of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli shelling continued.
In Gaza City, attacks were documented in the early hours of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and zone districts and in the east side neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"Once the night falls, the dread arrives with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.
"My family are terrified of the bombings. All the night we are resting together, embracing, especially my smallest child who rests his head on me the entire evening."
"Continuously we check the news to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will return to us."
Health Crisis
The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had received the bodies of several people by the afternoon, including several killed in an Israeli attack in the southern district.
Nasser hospital in the south region of the city said additional victims had been brought there. An individual was lost his life by Israeli forces while seeking assistance to the southern area, health workers reported.
