France to begin intercepting migrant vessels in English Channel following British demands
French officials have consented to start intercepting migrant vessels in the Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy follows the Prime Minister sent a letter to the President urging him to back the initiative and stating there currently "have no effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but only before they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative confirmation.
French police have infrequently acted to stop the overcrowded boats leaving the shoreline because it is considered too great a risk to both officers and individuals.
"It is crucial that we implement these methods this period... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson states personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.
Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential technique to snarl the propellers of the boats.
This determination to take action at all is a major advancement, following a brief shift towards a more aggressive strategy this summer, which ceased when the former government official left office.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a summit between the Prime Minister and French president, when French police were witnessed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will once more be permitted to intercept boats prior to they pick up migrant individuals from the beaches of northern France, although it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the start of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be seeking ways to adapt to evade interception, as they have frequently done in the past.
